Three months into my ministerial training I discovered a bump on the roof of my mouth that was diagnosed as cancer. I was told that as a result of the surgery to remove the tumor, I would be unable to speak intelligibly again. Engagement with a healing process that included both spiritual and surgical approaches awakened me to a heightened state of aliveness. I met my worst fears and watched as they dissolved along with the tumor in my mouth. Through this experience I became aware of my relationship to something larger than my egoic self. I learned to listen and respond to a deeper intelligence. I received a gift of Living Presence which enabled me to speak the truth I perceived. I went from being terrified of public speaking to being able to speak freely from the depths of the moment, in such a way as to intuitively touch the minds and hearts of many who heard my voice. The radical discontinuity of this healing and other related experiences served as a profound preparation for my ministry. Over the years I spent as a pulpit minister, and, now as the Director of The New Church Ministries, I 've continued to work to create initiatory experiences for those who felt called to ever-deepening levels of spiritual commitment and service. If you are called to this kind of service, it would be my privilege to serve you by providing the kind of experiential training I have found to be invaluable in life and ministry. Ellie Harold |
ABOUT ELLIE HAROLD
For ten years Reverend Ellie Harold was the dynamic leader of the Unity-Midtown Church she founded in Atlanta, Georgia. During her tenure there, she explored the possibilities for what church in the 21st century might be, discovering principles that resolve the tension that often exists between religion and spirituality. The result is a fresh new approach that creates church as a vehicle for spiritual practice and community.
Raised a Roman Catholic, Ellie left the Church as a teenager to experience a variety of alternative spiritual expressions. Her eclectic path led her to Eastern meditation, psychic reading, Jungian psychology, traditional psychotherapy, emotional release, breathwork and group energetic work. She has studied for over twelve years with Dr. Richard Moss, author of The Black Butterfly and The Second Miracle.
In 1983, following a series of mystical awakening experiences, Ellie received a calling to ministry. She was admitted to Unity School of Christianity, and while in training there, underwent spiritual healing of a rare cancer. In service to her calling, she led a small church in Nassau, Bahamas for two years, returning to the States to work on a writing project for John Templeton. Discovering the Laws of Life was published in 1994.
In addition to church ministry and writing projects, Ellie is a popular speaker and workshop leader. In 1993, Atlanta's Creative Loafing named her The Best Reason to go Back to Church. Ellie took a sabbatical from weekly church duties in 1999 and is now devoting her time to the development of The New Church Ministries.
Founded in 1994, The New Church Ministries provides a Curriculum for Transformation, as well as educational support to ministers and congregations.
Ellie is also the author of a book about New Church ideas - Where Two or More Are Gathered: A New Church for the 21st Century. She lives with her husband, Roo, in the Atlanta area.
